GelPro Anti-Fatigue Floor Mat

Just a few days before Thanksgiving, I received something really cool in the mail: a GelPro Anti-Fatigue Floor Mat. Yes, I was really excited. If you have ever had knee problems (or hip problems, back problems, or foot problems), you'll understand why. And if you're obese, odds are you've had some kind of pain in one of these areas. If not, you just wait.

For me, the main source of discomfort has been my knees. I have severe degenerative arthritis and some other knee problems that cause me a lot of pain, especially if I stand for long periods of time (or even short periods. It depends on the day). So, Thanksgiving for me has been a mixed bag. I love cooking, but standing in the kitchen all day by the sink and stove has *always* landed me in trouble. I end up limping around for the rest of the evening and the next day, popping pain medication and feeling 90 years old. This has happened every single year since I got fat. Over a decade. So when the GelPro mat came in time for Thanksgiving, I was thrilled! I could give it a REAL test: cook Thanksgiving dinner on it, standing all day, and see if it lessens my pain at all.

The GelPro mat has a patented, shock-absorbing gel core. The site explains: "Everyone can benefit from the comfort provided by a GelPro mat. There are, however, millions of individuals that are especially susceptible to hard, unforgiving flooring. Chief among them − young and old alike − are those with painful arthritis, lower back pain, foot pain, plantar fasciitis, and diabetes. These conditions, along with foot pain, plantar fasciitis, and diabetes are all exacerbated by standing on hard flooring. GelPro mats have unique and unsurpassed ergonomic properties to help counter these irritating and disabling pains."

The site goes on to explain that the mat helps prevent muscle spasms and tension by promoting blood flow. It also works by lowering the impact forces to the body and joints. You can read on the site about a scientific study which concluded that anti-fatigue mats reduced discomfort and fatigue by as much as 50% when standing on concrete floors for several hours.

So how did it work?? Well, I put it on the floor between my kitchen sink and stove, so I could stand on it while cooking AND washing dishes. I stepped onto its cushy goodness and my bare feet just relaxed right into the mat. It seriously feels SO GOOD. I would carpet my house in this stuff if I could. Anyway, I was standing a LOT, as I do every Thanksgiving while I make a million different dishes. And at the end of the day, I noticed I had no pain at all. Now, let me say I *always* have knee discomfort. They ache even if I sit all day long. But like I said, I used to be limping and/or immobile after a day of cooking. So this was a HUGE improvement to me. I felt like I hadn't even been standing all day. No limping, no pain. Seriously impressive. I love this thing. And no, I'm not getting paid for this review so if it sucked, I'd be sure and let you know. This mat has really helped me with being able to stand and cook or wash dishes without being sore later.

The mat comes in two sizes: 20" x 36" and 20" by 72". It comes in a ton of colors, textures, and patterns to match any decor, and it comes with a one year warranty.

Now for the best part: You can win a beautiful 20" by 36" GelPro mat in the Basketweave pattern for YOUR kitchen, for free, right here! In order to win, you need to leave a comment stating two things: 1) Why would you like to have a GelPro mat? (do you have knee pain? plantar fasciitis? sore legs? just think it's cute? want to give it to grandma?); and 2) your color preference if you win. Go here: GelPro Basketweave Color Choices and decide which of the six colors you like best. This contest is open to residents of the USA *and CANADA* and your mat will be shipped to you free of charge if you win. You must leave me a way to contact you if you are the winner. Good luck! I *know* you will totally love this mat! A winner will be chosen on January 25th.

Hi, Lyn! I visit your blog regularly and really love the fact that you're so real - a real woman dealing with the same things many of us face from day to day. Thanks for blogging!

I have severe foot pain when I stand for long periods of time, so this mat would be great to have when I'm cooking (which I also love to do) and doing the dishes. I spent a lot of time in my kitchen, so this would be a great and helpful addition. I love the chestnut color!

Thanks!

I am obese and I have a hard time with my knees. I am in the kitchen a lot cooking and trying to make healthy dishes so I think this mat would help me. I love the color: Coquina and I think it would go with my kitchen. email: Detjebea5@aol.com

Thanks for the giveaway. For me, it's that lower back pain and tiredness that gets me on Thanksgiving day.

My girlfriend and I are both trying to lose weight. As such we do a lot of cooking in the kitchen now. We love cooking together, but both of us experience back pain after standing at the sink/counter/stove too long. I think this would help us both greatly in our efforts to become healthy. Of course, eventually, I believe we would come to no longer need the mat, at which point, I think I would also do a giveaway on my blog.

Oh, and I asked my GF what color she would want and she said hazelnut, then went on to explain that a hazelnut is actually a seed masquerading as a nut.

Thanks Lyn!

I would love one of these too. I own a business selling kids art and craft supplies and educational toys and I attend about 30 Child Care Conferences a year. By the end of the day, not only do my feet ache, but my whole body aches. I am guessing this would help a lot.

Loved your review, and the fact that you would tell us if these things "sucked". I, too, have knee problems, no cartiledge left in one and getting close in the other, so this would do wonders for me I'm sure. The chestnut would go great in my kitchen.

Have really enjoyed reading the product reviews and have even ventured away from your blog to the manufacturers websites, so you are managing to direct a little traffic their way even if they aren't paying you to.

Lyn,

Thanks for covering this item- I have long wanted one but there just isn't room for one in the budget! I appreciate your review because you aren't a woman who would talk up a cruddy product for free stuff- I trust that you really found this to be a quality product which confirms that I really need one!

I love to create tasty foods using real, whole foods and avoiding processed stuffs as much as possible, which tends to mean meals take quite a bit longer to prepare (and clean up!). You can see some of my "foode creations" here:

http://foodefight.blogspot.com/search/label/foode%20creations

I am super morbidly obese, and making healthy meals is a key to my success in weight loss. That said, it's a double edged sword because I am recovering from a herniated disk which makes my back prone to spasms (which the GelPro specifically helps prevent! Sweet!), my hips and knees ache, my ankles swell, and I was born with naturally high arches so carrying 200+ extra pounds has wreaked havoc on my feet!

Often preparing my husband's lunches reduces me to tears, and then he has to make them on top of working 80 hours, and I long to serve him- not because I have to, but because I really want to!

I choose to keep creating (and cleaning up!) healthy meals for my family but having the GelPro floor mat (in gorgeous truffle!) would definitely help curb off some of the fatigue that associates my work in the kitchen!

Thanks, Lyn!

I never win anything, but wanted to comment on this anyway. I have severe back pain and my husband is on his feet all day long and has foot issues. I also have diabetes so it would help with my sometimes foot issues. We both would benefit from this product as we try to cook healthy meals together most nights.

All the colors are great and I would take any one! Chestnut or I think it was truffle would be awesome.

About 4 years ago I fractured my back. Since then, I cannot stand up for a long period of time without having my lower back hurt. We have tile floors in the kitchen and I need this for that area because I LOVE cooking. I have been eyeing these for a while but they are a little pricey.

I love the coquina color.

Thanks so much for this giveaway!

The chestnut color would go great.

My feet (heels, specifically) kill me when I have to stand on the tile floor in my kitchen - I have heard about these mats and would LOVE to have one!

Right now, I have two rather pathetic mats to cushion my wonky ankles, feet and knees. Mostly feet, though, as I have plantar fasciitis, and standing for more than an hour makes them hurt LoADS. And swell. For some reason, washing dishes makes my lower back ache, too. I have no idea if a cushioned mat would make a difference there, but I assume my feet would be happier.

The color I like: hazelnut.

What a cool mat. Pricey, but if I don't win, I may need to get me one, anyway. I am spending more time in the kitchen these days. :D

thanks--and no, I didn't eat a bowlful of cabbage. :(

And you know, if I love it, I'll buy one for my mom who has sciatica and arthritis in her back. hazelnut, please

I would love this so very much for my mother, she is a mail carrier whom walks her route for upwards to 6 hours a day here in Arizona under the hot desert sun, and has done so for going on 23 year this July, She has battled Melanoma and as a result has many skin grafts on her legs, she gets knots in her feet and her knees swell to the point sometimes it is difficult for her to put normal clothes on they have swelled so much. Yet, despite this she must still work. She enjoys cooking and baking but the standing does make it hard on hard tile floors. It would be at all possible I would love one for her. In the color of truffle 

moonduster said...

For me, I would want one because I have plantaar fasciitis (although it has vastly improved almost to the point of not having it anymore since losing weight) and frequent lower back pain. But, although I am technically a US resident, I reside in the UK, so I am posting to hopefully get one for my parents in the US. My dad has diabetes and really poor circulation in his legs as well as arthritis in his ankles. And my mom has had both knees replaced due to arthritis. It would hopefully be helpful to them.

A neutral colour like a light tan or brown would work.

moonduster said...

More specifically: khaki

What a great review Lynn! This sounds like my cup of tea. :) I work as a massage therapist and am on my feet ALL day long. With a deviated disc in my lower back it makes my work quite painful by the end of the day... not to mention that I am a big lady so I am sure that doesn't help. Something like this mat may really help with the pain at work.

I love the Chestnut color best. :)

Hello,
That is awesome. I have wanted one since the commercials started back in November. Anyway, bad knees + a New Year's resolution to cook healthy food for my family means I probably need one. I would like Hazelnut.

Can I ask: are they hard to clean?

Erin

Lyn said...

Erin~
Not hard to clean at all! I just wipe it with a warm damp cloth. The instructions say if it gets dirty/sticky you can use a mild soap (dish soap) to wash it off and dry it. No other cleaners. I've had mine for 2 months now and it looks good as new. Just don't let water puddle underneath it (keep your floor dry, wipe up water spills on/near the mat). I honestly love it. :)

This certainly would have come in handy during the Christmas bake-a-thon! If I am lucky enough to win, I love the mahogany colored mat. I am a baker by trade and am on my feet for sometimes 12 hours srtaight without sitting down. I have cheap anti-fatigue mats at work but nothing for my home kitchen, where I also spend considerable time. Being overweight and on my feet all day just makes my foot and hip problems worse, and the last thing I want to do when I get home is stand in the kitchen making dinner- if I had this to come home to (in black of course) it might not seem so bad!

I have lower and mid-back pain along with pain in my left knee. This product sounds amazing. I would love to have it in the Khaki color. Now that I know about this product, I want at least one of them. Thanks for the awesome giveaway opportunity.

Hola =)

I'm a forever lurker, but you're slowly drawing me out. It's quite frustrating as i feel i'm in the best health of my life weight wise considering i've lost over 60 lbs and am now considered only "overweight". Yet in my mid twenties i find myself suffering from chronic knee pain, and lower back pain. Two bad discs and arthritic changes in my bones show me that my body is paying for the years when i was morbidly obese. I feel as i've been doing well yet my body pains tell me otherwise. Hopefully the mat will alleviate some of that knee/back pain when working in the kitchen.

Good old black for me. Thanks!

I would put this in front of my sink. Washing mountains of dirty dishes twice a day is my absolute least favorite chore. Right before washing the mountains of dirty laundry. This gel mat would make my life just a wee bit less unpleasant.

I put on running shoes to wash dishes so that I have some padding. A bad knee leads to a bad back ...

Chestnut would be lovely.

And thanks for a practical review for real people.

I would love this for the kitchen and the color chestnut. I didn't even know these existed! Thanks for the giveaway!

Found an ad for this product in a magazine and immediately visited their website. After browsing there, I "googled" mats and found your website. I am so glad to know that you believe that this product is well worth the purchase of one, two, three, or more. My feet hurt all of the time, 24/7, 365 days a year. I've had this pain for the past 5 years and it only grows worse each day. I, too, feel like I am 90 years old and I now plan my steps in advance before making a trip to the bathroom or any other room in the house. I rarely go anywhere anymore--I'm afraid that I will become stranded because I won't be able to make it back to my car. I am 51 years old and have never really had a weight problem, but due to the inability to remain active, I am beginning to pack on the pounds. I danced all of my growing-up years and was fitted in toe shoes at the age of 8 years, which we now know is much too young and not appropriate, but rather dangerous and a practice that has been curtailed. This, combined with years of wearing very high-heeled shoes, walking up and down hospital hallways (I am a nurse), and a predisposition to bunions have caused my feet, legs, and back, pain that I never thought possible. I don't dare take narcotics; I stopped taking Motrin long ago because of the potential side effects and because it just didn't work. I haven't worn anything but well-padded tennis shoes in two years now and I feel so self-conscious about my appearance that I have become quite the recluse; my self-confidence is almost non-existent and I am so afraid of what the future holds. I am single and almost unable to work any longer. I have no idea of what I will do when the day comes that I can no longer walk. But, here I found a bright spot--these mats! My house is a two-story one with tile and hardwood flooring on the entire first floor of the house, carpeting on the staircase and entire second floor. If I knew then what I know now!!! I am going to look into these mats and if they gave me even a month longer to be in the kitchen with my granddaughter, I would feel blessed. Thank you so much for sharing and for listening.
